Phase Change (Poem for Barack Obama)

The frightened ships will cling to the shore,
Unwilling to leave what they know.
I will give them passage, learn to row,
Teach them: There is another shore -
The second appears when the first is gone.

I carry this water for luck, to walk on,
To follow you home over rock.
I give you my compass, this gathered-up fog:
It will soften the air for you, give birth to stars,
As ice floats to light, we sail.
